MYOPIA CONTROL SOLUTIONS

There are four primary categories of myopia control treatments: atropine eye drops, orthokeratology (orthoK), soft contact lenses and spectacle lenses.

Atropine drops are usually prescribed by ophthalmologists in an eye clinic and it has proven to be effective with short term results to control myopia.

Orthokeratology (orthoK) are lenses worn at night when sleeping. They alter the shape of your cornea to temporarily correct short-sightedness so glasses and soft contact lenses aren’t needed during waking hours. This treatment is often compared to dental braces.

Soft contact lenses are lenses that are placed on top of your cornea which corrects myopia. One such example would be the MiSight contact lens, which is the only FDA approved single use, disposable soft contact lens that indicated to slow down the progression of myopia in children.

Spectacle lenses that are similar to bifocals and progressive (PAL) lenses are shown to be beneficial to control myopia. These lenses are designed to provide distance correction at the eye point, with a slightly lower prescription at the bottom of the lens. The purpose of these lenses prescribed for myopia control is to reduce the child’s accommodation (the ability of the eye to change its focus from distant to near objects (and vice versa) when doing near work.
